NGA-mapping: Visual representation of high-speed broadband coverage in Switzerland
Political decision-makers at the communal, cantonal, and federal levels must have decision-support tools in the field of high-speed internet (very high bandwidth or next-generation access) and be able to gain a better understanding of the different technologies available to serve Switzerland through modern telecommunication networks. The Federal Office of Communications (OFCOM) has established a working group bringing together representatives from both the economy and the administration. Three mandates aimed at providing a general overview of the current coverage of modern telecommunication networks in Switzerland were defined in August 2011:
- Creation of maps to visualize the availability of very high-speed services in Switzerland
- Analysis of demand to assess which telecommunication services are essential today
- Guide for political authorities to enable optimal coverage of Switzerland with very high-speed connections
