Archäologische Fundstellen werden inventarisiert. Ziel des Fundstelleninventars ist es, alle Fundmeldungen zu analysieren, zu überprüfen und zu bewerten.Aufgrund dieser Informationen werden die eigentlichen Fundstellen definiert. Sind Fundstellen von Planungen oder Bewilligungen nach dem kantonalen Planungs- und Baugesetz betroffen, muss die Kantonsarchäologie in das Verfahren einbezogen werden. Das laufend nachgeführte Fundstelleninventar erlaubt eine schnelle Bearbeitung der Baugesuche. Archäologische Massnahmen können dadurch frühzeitig eingeleitet und optimal mit Bauvorhaben koordiniert werden. Auch für die Wissenschaft stellt das Inventar präzise und schnell abrufbare Informationen zur Verfügung. Archäologische Fundstellen sind als orientierende Inhalte Bestandteil des Zonenplans.
