Die Ermittlung eines Unfallschwerpunktes ist in der VSS Norm SN 641 724 „Strassenverkehrssicherheit, Unfallschwerpunkt-Management“ definiert. Die Unfallschwerpunktsuche erfolgt automatisiert durch das VUGIS (Verkehrsunfall-GIS) und wird durch das ASTRA verifiziert. Somit gilt gesamtschweizerisch der gleiche Standard für Unfallschwerpunkte.
