SilvaProtect-CH (hazard information at national level): Rockfall
Rockfall and large rock avalanches are characterised by the isolated falling movement (falling, jumping, rolling) of individual rocks or boulders of up to several cubic metres in size. They can reach speeds of up to 30 m/s. The moving rocks and boulders generally come to a halt on gradients smaller than 30°. Forests can reduce the kinetic energy of the boulders significantly. This layer contains a general hazard index map of potential rockfall and large rock avalanche trajectories based on the modelling of the rockfall and large rock avalanche process carried out by the SilvaProtect-CH project. The modelling of rockfall processes does not take the effect of forests into account.
