Die Felslabore der Schweiz sind Forschungseinrichtungen, in denen unterhalb der Erdoberfläche die Eigenschaften der umgebenden Gesteine und die darin ablaufenden Prozesse untersucht werden. Ziel ist dabei die Gesteine in Bezug auf ihre Eignung für verschiedene Anwendungen zu untersuchen. So stehen unter anderem die Eignung der Gesteinseinheiten für die Endlagerung radioaktiver Abfälle, für die Speicherung von CO2 oder Untersuchungen zur Nutzung von geothermischen Ressourcen im Zentrum der Arbeiten. Bezüglich der in situ-Arbeiten gibt es 3 Ziele: 1) Entwicklung von neuen Methoden und Technologien zur Erschliessung und Untersuchung des Untergrunds, 2) Charakterisierung des Gesteins, Ermittlung der Kennwerte und Identifikation der thermischen, hydraulischen und felsmechanischen Prozesse, und 3) Demonstrationsexperimente, Validierung neuer Technologien.

Die Felslabore spielen eine wichtige Rolle bezüglich gesellschaftlicher Akzeptanz von Technologien und Prozessen, die im Untergrund eingesetzt werden. So können sich Besucher ein Bild unter Tage machen und eine Meinung bilden.

Les laboratoires souterrains de la Suisse sont des installations de recherche, dans lesquelles les propriétés des roches environnantes et les processus qui s’y déroulent peuvent être étudiés in situ. Ces recherches ont pour but d’évaluer l’adéquation des roches pour divers domaines d’application. L’utilisation potentielle des unités rocheuses du sous-sol pour le stockage à long terme des déchets radioactifs, pour la séquestration du CO2 ou pour des recherches sur l’exploitation des ressources géothermiques sont ainsi au cœur des travaux. Les recherches in situ poursuivent trois buts: 1) Développement de nouvelles méthodes et technologies pour la prospection et l’exploitation du sous-sol, 2) Caractérisation des roches, détermination des paramètres clefs et identification des processus thermiques, hydrauliques et mécaniques, et 3) Expériences de démonstration, validation de nouvelles technologies.

Les laboratoires souterrains jouent un rôle important en ce qui concerne l’acceptation au sein de la société des technologies et processus mis en œuvre dans le sous-sol. Chacun peut ainsi se faire sa propre opinion sur la base d’une image concrète lors d’une visite sous terre.

I laboratori sotterranei della Svizzera sono delle istallazioni di ricerca nei quali si studiano le proprietà e i processi intrinseci delle rocce circostanti. L'obbiettivo è quello di studiare l'idoneità delle rocce per varie applicazioni. La ricerca è incentrata, tra l'altro, sull'idoneità delle unità rocciose per lo stoccaggio a lungo termine delle scorie radioattive e per lo stoccaggio di CO2, ma anche sulle indagini relative allo sfruttamento delle risorse geotermiche. Per quanto riguarda il lavoro in situ, sono stati fissati 3 obiettivi: 1) sviluppo di nuovi metodi e tecnologie per l'esplorazione e l'utilizzo del sottosuolo, 2) caratterizzazione della roccia, determinazione dei valori caratteristici e identificazione dei processi termici, idraulici e meccanici, e 3) esperimenti di dimostrazione, convalida delle nuove tecnologie.

I laboratori sotterranei giocano un ruolo importante per facilitare l’accettazione sociale delle tecnologie e dei processi tecnici applicati nel sottosuolo.

Switzerland's rock laboratories are research facilities where the properties of the surrounding rocks and the processes taking place within them are studied beneath the earth's surface. The aim is to examine the rocks to see if they are suitable for various uses. The work focuses, for example, on the suitability of rock formations for the permanent disposal of radioactive waste or for storing CO2, or on investigations concerning the exploitation of geothermal resources. With regard to the work in situ, there are three objectives: 1) developing new methods and technologies for exploring and investigating the subsurface, 2) characterising the rock, determining the characteristic values and identifying the thermal, hydraulic and rock mechanical processes, and 3) validating new technologies through demonstration experiments. The rock laboratories play an important role with regard to social acceptance of technologies and methods applied in the subsurface. This allows visitors to visualise the underground for themselves and form an opinion.
