Geotopinventar
Das Inventar bietet eine systematische Übersicht über den Geotopbestand des Kantons St.Gallen. Die ausgewiesenen Geotope gewähren Einblicke ins erdgeschichtliche Geschehen während einer Zeitspanne von rund 300 Mio Jahren (Oberkarbon bis Holozän). Sie dokumentieren Vorgänge, die für die Genese und heutige Ausprägung der st.gallischen Naturlandschaften von grundlegender Bedeutung sind.

Die Objektauswahl soll die wichtigen erd- und naturlandschaftsgeschichtlichen Ereignisse und Entwicklungsstadien repräsentieren oder von allgemeiner Bedeutung für Wissenschaft und Bildung sein.

Anstoss für die Erarbeitung eines Geotopinventars für den Kanton St.Gallen gab eine im Jahr 1997 lancierte Primärerhebung der Geotope von voraussichtlich nationaler Bedeutung durch die Arbeitsgruppe Geotopschutz Schweiz der Schweizerischen Akademie der Naturwissenschaften. Das Projekt "Geotopinventar Kanton St.Gallen" konnte dank finanzieller Unterstützung durch die St.Gallische Naturwissenschaftliche Gesellschaft (NWG), den Kanton St.Gallen und den Bund in mehrjähriger Arbeit realisiert werden.
