Biosphärenreservate dienen nicht nur dem Schutz und der Pflege von Ökosystemen, sondern auch der ökologischen Forschung, der umweltgerechten Landnutzung und der Umweltbildung. Es sind die herausragenden Zeugnisse der Geschichte der Menschheit und der Natur, die mit den Emblemen des UNESCO-Welterbes und der Biosphären ausgezeichnet werden: stumme und doch beredte Zeugen grossartiger Kulturleistungen und Naturphänomene. Über die Aufnahme eines Gebietes entscheidet nach Antrag des Staates der Internationale Koordinationsrat des MAB-Progammes der UNESCO basierend auf erlassenen Kriterien welche in einem Kriterienkatalog für die Schweiz konkretisiert wurden. Kriterien sind vorab Repräsentativität, Grösse, naturräumliche und politische Einheit, Zustimmung der Bevölkerung.

Les réserves de biosphère font partie du programme « L’homme et la biosphère » (MAB) lancé par l’UNESCO en 1970. Il s’agit de zones protégées représentatives et connectées au plan international pour la conservation de la biodiversité de la planète. Elles devraient servir d’exemples d’exploitation durable, c’est-à-dire intégrer équitablement les aspects écologiques et économiques. Par ailleurs, les réserves de biosphère sont des lieux de recherche et de perfectionnement. Typiquement, elles comprennent actuellement trois zones: la zone centrale, la zone tampon et la zone de développement. La décision d’inscrire un site est prise, sur demande de l’État, par le Conseil international de coordination du programme MAB de l’UNESCO, sur la base de critères établis et précisés dans un catalogue de critères pour la Suisse. Les critères incluent notamment la représentativité, la taille, l’unité naturelle et politique, ainsi que l’adhésion de la population.

Le riserve di biosfera non servono solo a proteggere e a curare gli ecosistemi, ma sono utili anche per la ricerca ecologica, l'utilizzazione ecocompatibile del suolo e l'educazione ambientale. Sono testimoni eccezionali della storia dell'umanità e della natura, premiati con gli emblemi del patrimonio mondiale dell'UNESCO e delle biosfere: testimoni silenziosi e al contempo eloquenti di prestazioni culturali e di fenomeni naturali magnifici. L’inclusione di un territorio viene decisa, su richiesta dello Stato, dal Consiglio internazionale di coordinamento del programma MAB dell’UNESCO, sulla base di criteri stabiliti e concretizzati in un catalogo di criteri specifico per la Svizzera. I criteri comprendono in primo luogo la rappresentatività, la dimensione, l’unità naturale e politica del territorio nonché il consenso della popolazione.

Biosphere reserves are not only used to protect and preserve ecosystems, but also for environmental research, environmentally-friendly land use and environmental education. They are terrific showcases of human and natural history that have been designated UNESCO World Heritage sites and biospheres: silent yet eloquent examples of the great cultural achievements and natural phenomena. The inclusion of an area is decided by the International Coordinating Council of UNESCO’s MAB Programme upon application by the state, based on established criteria that have been specified in a criteria catalogue for Switzerland. The criteria include, above all, representativeness, size, natural and political coherence, and the consent of the local population.
