Final energy consumption per km² by municipality and canton in the Upper Rhine region (2021)

Produced as part of the Interreg Upper Rhine Atmo-Rhena PLUS project, this map shows final energy consumption in megawatt hours per km² by municipality and canton in the Upper Rhine region in 2021.



Energy consumption is one of the main determinants and levers for action on air pollutant and greenhouse gas emissions. Final energy consumption corresponds to the energy consumed directly in the territory, after losses in production, transformation, and distribution. By definition, the energy sector does not consume final energy here. On this map, final energy consumption per km² is the sum of the industry-tertiary-waste, residential, and transport sectors in the municipalities/cantons of the Upper Rhine region.



For the industry-tertiary-waste sector, municipalities with industrial zones (not energy production sites, which consume so-called primary energy) stand out on the map.



Energy consumption in the residential sector mainly corresponds to consumption within buildings: heating, domestic hot water, cooking, air conditioning, lighting, and electrical appliances.



Finally, major roads (highways) and urban areas stand out due to the final energy consumption of transport.



The static map in PDF format is available at the municipal level (France and Germany) and at the canton level (Switzerland). The data is accessible as open data only at the EPCI, Kreis and canton levels.

Collection of estimated final energy consumption for the Grand Est region (ATMO Grand Est), Baden-Württemberg (Landesanstalt für Umwelt Baden-Württemberg – LUBW and Statistisches Landesamt Baden-Württemberg - StaLa), the cantons of Basel-Stadt and Basel-Landschaft (Lufthygienamt Beider Basel – LHA), Rhineland-Palatinate (Landesamt für Umwelt Rheinland-Pfalz – LfU and Energieagentur Rheinland-Pfalz/Energieatlas - EA RLP) and the canton of Jura (Office de l'environnement - ENV Jura). Data from the cantons of Jura, Aargau, and Solothurn have been grouped by canton.
