Das Geoid in der Schweiz 1:500000
Das Geoid ist eine spezielle Äquipotentialfläche (Niveaufläche) des Schwerepotentials der Erde, nämlich diejenige durch die „mittlere“ Meeresoberfläche. Massenüberschüsse (z.B. Berge, Gebiete höherer Dichte) heben im allgemeinen das Geoid, Massendefizite (Senken, Gebiete niedrigerer Dichte) senken es ab. Die Geoidfläche wird üblicherweise dargestellt, indem die Abstände (die Geoidhöhen) zu einem bestimmten Referenzellipsoid (Sphäroid) angegeben werden. Die in der Karte dargestellte Geoidhöhen (Äquidistanz der Kurven = 0.2 m) beziehen sich auf das Referenzellipsoid der schweizerischen Landesvermessung (Bessel-Ellipsoid). Das Geoid wird benötigt um die mit GPS erhaltenen ellipsoidischen Höhen in "Höhen über Meer" umzurechnen.
