Sustainable intendification - land-use change between 2000 and 2020

Die veröffentlichten Landnutzungsdaten aus drei Regionen der Schweiz waren Teil des Pro-jekts „What is Sustainable Intensification? Operationalizing Sustainable Agricultural Pa-thways in Europe (SIPATH)“, das vom Schweizerischen Nationalfonds (Förderungsnummer CRSII5_183493) finanziert wurde. Das übergeordnete Ziel dieses Projekts bestand darin, kurzfristige Entwicklungen der landwirtschaftlichen Bodennutzung und Landschaftsstruktur über einen Zeitraum von 20 Jahren für 16 einzelne Untersuchungsgebiete in 11 Ländern, die vom Mittelmeerraum bis zur borealen Zone reichen, zu bewerten. Die folgenden Datensätze veranschaulichen Bodennutzungsdaten, die für die drei Untersuchungsgebiete in der Schweiz zu zwei Zeitpunkten zwischen 2000 und 2020 generiert wurden, je nach Datenverfügbarkeit. Der Datenerhebungsprozess umfasste die Kartierung der Landnutzung durch visuelle Bildin-terpretation von orthorektifizierten Luftbildern unter Verwendung geografischer Informati-onssysteme (ESRI ArcGIS Pro). Die Digitalisierung der Landnutzung wurde von zwei Wis-senschaftlern in der Schweiz durchgeführt, die mit den jeweiligen Projektpartnern in den Studienländern in Kontakt standen, um Fachwissen auszutauschen. Die minimale Kartie-rungseinheit betrug 252 m² für Flächenelemente. Die Landbedeckung wurde gemäß der Ha-bitatklassifizierung des Europäischen Naturinformationssystems (EUNIS) (EEA 2019) klas-sifiziert. Die breitesten Habitatklassen wurden systematisch in den Regionen kartiert, wobei jede eine Fläche von etwa 25 km² abdeckte. Während sich EUNIS auf Habitatarten kon-zentriert, zielte die Studie jedoch auf die Intensität der landwirtschaftlichen Bodennutzung ab, wobei mehrere EUNIS-Klassen durch verschiedene Intensitätsstufen der Bodennutzung ergänzt wurden. Dies wurde auf Grünland, Olivenhaine und Obstgärten angewendet. Die räumliche Auflösung der Orthofotos reichte von 25 cm bis 2 m. Dementsprechend gab es Situationen, in denen die räumliche Auflösung nicht ausreichte, um die Landnutzung genau zu bestimmen. In solchen Fällen wurden entweder Orthofotos aus etwa demselben Jahr her-angezogen, die möglicherweise unterschiedliche phänologische Stadien zeigten, oder es wurden Landnutzungsstatistiken und Expertenmeinungen auf der Grundlage des lokalen Ex-pertenwissens über die jeweilige Region herangezogen.

Die Daten aller Regionen werden auf dem Datenrepository Zenodo veröffentlicht.

L'objectif général de ce projet était d'évaluer l'évolution à court terme de l'utilisation des sols agricoles et de la structure du paysage sur une période de 20 ans pour 16 zones d'étude individuelles dans 11 pays, allant de la région méditerranéenne à la zone boréale. Les ensembles de données suivants illustrent les données d'utilisation des sols générées pour les trois régions d'étude en Suisse à deux moments entre 2000 et 2020, selon la disponibilité des données. Le processus de collecte des données a consisté à carto-graphier l'occupation des sols par photo-interprétation visuelle de photographies aériennes orthorectifiées en utilisant des systèmes d'information géographique (ESRI ArcGIS Pro). La numérisation de l'occupation des sols a été réalisée par deux scientifiques en Suisse, qui ont été en contact avec leurs partenaires de projet respectifs dans les pays étudiés afin d'échan-ger des connaissances techniques. L'unité cartographique minimale était de 252 m² pour les éléments de surface. La couverture terrestre a été classée selon la classification des habitats du Système européen d'information sur la nature (EUNIS) (AEE 2019). Les classes d'habitat les plus larges ont été systématiquement cartographiées dans les zones d'étude, chacune couvrant une superficie d'environ 25 km². Cependant, alors qu'EUNIS se concentre sur les types d'habitats, l'étude a ciblé l'intensité de l'utilisation agricole des sols, en complétant plusieurs classes EUNIS par différents niveaux d'intensité de l'utilisation des sols. Cela a été appliqué aux prairies, aux oliveraies et aux vergers. La résolution spatiale des orthophotos variait de 25 cm à 2 m. En conséquence, il y a eu des situations où la résolution spatiale n'était pas suffisante pour déterminer avec précision l'utilisation des terres. Dans de tels cas, soit on a utilisé des orthophotos prises à peu près la même année, qui pouvaient montrer des stades phénologiques différents, soit on a utilisé des statistiques sur l'utilisation des terres et des avis d'experts basés sur les connaissances d'experts locaux sur la région étudiée en ques-tion.

Les données de toutes les régions sont publiées sur le référentiel de données Zenodo.

The published land use data from three regions in Switzerland were part of the project “What is Sustainable Intensification? Operationalizing Sustainable Agricultural Pathways in Europe (SIPATH)”, which was funded by the Swiss National Science Foundation (grant no. CRSII5_183493). The overall objective of this project was to assess short-term trajectories in agriculture land use and landscape structure over a period of 20 years for 16 individual study sites located in 11 countries, ranging from the Mediterranean to the boreal zone. The following datasets illustrate land use data that were generated for the three study sites in Switzerland at two points in time between 2000 and 2020, depending on data availability. The data collection process encompassed land use mapping through visual image interpreta-tion of orthorectified aerial photographs using geographic information systems (ESRI ArcGIS Pro). Land use digitalization was conducted by two scientists in Switzerland, who were in contact with the respective project partners in the study countries to exchange expert knowledge. Minimal mapping unit was 25m2 for areal elements. Land cover was classified following the European Nature Information System (EUNIS) habitat classification (EEA 2019). The broadest habitat classes were systematically mapped in the study sites, with each covering an area of approximately 25 km². While EUNIS focuses on habitat types, the study, however, targeted the intensity of agricultural land-use, several EUNIS classes were com-plemented with levels of land-use intensities. This was applied for grassland, olive groves and fruit orchards. The spatial resolution of the orthophotos ranged from 25cm to 2m. Ac-cordingly, there were situations in which the spatial resolution was insufficient to accurately determine the land use. In such cases, either orthophotos from about the same year were consulted, possibly showing different phenological stages, or land use statistics and expert judgement based on local expert knowledge of the respective study area were applied.
