Die kirchlichen Einheiten (Pfarreien und Pastroalräume) sollen mit den Grenzen der staatskirchenrechtlichen Körperschaften (Kirchgemeinden) in Bezug gebracht werden können. Die Pfarreien dienen später als Grundlage für die Erhebung bzw. Ableitung der römisch-katholischen Kirchgemeinden (ein kantonaler Geobasisdatensatz). Die Zugehörigkeiten und Zuständigkeiten sollen im dualen System (kirchliches und staatskirchenrechtliches System) in einen räumlichen Bezug gesetzt werden.
