Land use statistics - Forest mixture ratio 1990
In 1996, as part of the project "Forest differentiation using digital satellite imagery", two datasets covering the whole of Switzerland were created on the basis of Landsat TM satellite images, which divide the forests into coniferous, mixed coniferous, mixed deciduous and deciduous categories. The aim of this project was, on the one hand, to help to develop reliable experience and knowledge of digital remote sensing and of using satellite data for statistical purposes and, on the other hand, to add a statistically verified and geographically differentiated distinction between deciduous, mixed and coniferous forests to the Swiss land use statistics. After the satellite images used had been geographically and radiometrically corrected, the first step involved distinguishing between forest and non-forest areas. After this the forest was divided into four mixture ratios.

Die schweizerische Arealstatistik liefert dank identischer Erhebungsmethode und detailliertem Kategorienkatalog zuverlässige Daten über die Fläche, Dichte und allfällige Unternutzung der Bestockungen. Neben dem Gebüschwald werden auch Aufforstungen und Waldschadenflächen ausgewiesen. Ein Vergleich mit anderen europäischen Daten zeigt jedoch, dass Waldflächen häufig auch nach dem Mischungsgrad (Nadelwald, Mischwald, Laubwald) unterteilt werden. Die vorliegenden Geobasisdaten sollen deshalb die Arealstatistik der Schweiz um eine quantitative, statistisch abgesicherte und geografisch differenzierte Unterscheidung von Laub-, Misch- und Nadelwald ergänzen. Um auch weitergehenden und unterschiedlichen Benützeranforderungen bestmöglich entgegenzukommen, wurden auf der Grundlage von Landsat-TM-Satellitenbildern aus den Jahren 1990/92 gesamtschweizerische Datensätze erzeugt, welche den Wald in Nadel-, Nadelmisch-, Laubmisch- und Laubwald unterteilen.

Eine Nachführung dieser Mischungsgradklassifikation ist nicht vorgesehen. Veränderungen können in jedem Fall nur ausgewiesen werden, wenn sie die methodenbedingten Klassifikationsunsicherheiten klar übertreffen. Dies ist von der Qualität (geometrische Auflösung, Anzahl und Unterscheidungspotential der Spektralkanäle) der verfügbaren Satellitendaten und Klassifikationsalgorithmen einerseits, vom Ausmass der tatsächlichen Änderungen und vom zeitlichen Abstand zur Ersterhebung andererseits abhängig.

Elf Landsat-TM-Szenen wurden zuerst geometrisch und radiometrisch korrigiert. Anschliessend wurde in einem ersten Klassifikationsschritt der Wald vom Nichtwald unterschieden. In einem zweiten wurde der Wald in die vier Mischungsgrade Nadelwald, Nadelmischwald, Laubmischwald und Laubwald unterteilt. Resultate sind in 25 m und 100 m Rasterauflösung erhältlich, wobei diese kompatibel zu den übrigen Hektardaten der Bundesstatistik sind.

Als Datengrundlage dienten 11 Landsat-5 TM-Szenen aus den Jahren 1990 bis 1992. Der Aufnahmezeitpunkt lag jeweils zwischen Mitte Juli und Mitte September.
