Seismizitätskarte der Schweiz 1:500000
Erdbeben entstehen, wenn sich zwei Gesteinspartien im Erdinnern plötzlich und ruckartig entlang eines Bruches aneinander vorbei bewegen. Ausgelöst werden sie dann, wenn aufgestauten Spannungen die Festigkeit der Gesteine übersteigen. In der Schweiz stehen Erdbeben im Zusammenhang mit den Kontinentalbewegungen von Afrika und Europa, welche auch für die Bildung der Alpen verantwortlich sind. Für Beben entspricht das Epizentrum dem Ort an der Erdoberfläche der über dem Punkt im Erdinnern liegt, wo der Bruchvorgang angefangen hat. Die Karte enthält ca. 900 Erdbeben in der Schweiz für den Zeitabschnitt 1972-1980, deren Epizentren (Richter-Skala) und Herdtiefen bestimmt wurden.
