Im Kanton anfallendes Abwasser wird in elf regionalen und acht kommunalen Abwasserreinigungsanlagen (ARA) gereinigt. Das Abwasser einiger Gemeinden und Ortsteile fliesst in eine von acht ausserkantonalen Anlagen.Siedlungsentwässerung und AbwasserreinigungIm Kanton Luzern fallen pro Jahr rund 60 Milliarden Liter Abwasser an, das gesammelt, transportiert und gereinigt werden muss. Dieses Abwasser wird in 19 regionalen oder kommunalen Abwasserreinigungsanlagen (ARA) sowie in einigen ausserkantonalen ARA behandelt. Sie entfernen organische Schmutzstoffe sowie die Nährstoffe Stickstoff und Phosphor. Dazu kommen rund 100 private Kleinkläranlagen, welche das Abwasser von abgelegenen Bauten reinigen. Das Abwasser von stark befahrenen Strassenabschnitten wird von Strassenbehandlungsanlagen gereinigt.
